What neighborhood do you live in?
This month marks the 10th year I’ve lived in Bed Stuy, Brooklyn.
What is your favorite item of clothing and why?
I try not to get too attached to clothing, because I’m super hard on it and will inevitably dump an entire cup of coffee on or wash it with a tinted chap stick. There was one Chaka Kahn concert t-shirt of my dad’s from the 70’s that I treasured. I wore it into the ground and dried it on high heat one too many times, but I still have the shreds in storage.
Does your job dictate, in any way, what you wear everyday?
I work in costume design and styling, so I’m on my feet almost every single day. I’m usually in sneakers/flats, something oversized so I can move, and probably with a lot of pockets for me to stuff supplies in. Long sleeves make me insane when I have to use my hands a lot, so I have a rotating cast of white tank tops I wear under everything in case I need to strip down, even in the winter time.
How would you define good style?
I love when people are really dedicated to a specific color, decade or type of dressing. Like when I see a woman dressed in all chartreuse at the Met, down to her hair and makeup, it makes me smile. I don’t know if it’s necessarily “good style” but it’s more just an ultimate, hell yea, do you. You can tell they are only dressing for themselves and no one else, which I think is the truest form of style.
Can you describe your all-time favorite pair of shoes?
I used to have a white, light up pair of iridescent LA Gears when I was about 5. They’ve since been memorialized in a pastel drawing of my sister and I in matching denim outfits hanging at my parent’s house in Colorado.
Where do you buy most of your clothing?
Most of my clothing is second hand, I love owning things that have lived an entire life before I dug them up somewhere in New Jersey. That being said, it’s nice to have a few designer pieces that you mix into an outfit. Sometimes in my head I like to tally everything up that I’m wearing, and it’s like; this was free, this was 5 dollars, and everything together costs less than 20 dollars, except here is this designer jacket or pair of shoes that I saved up for and love.
Do you have any particular item of clothing that makes you feel powerful?
Having a really good pair of denim always makes me feel good and confident. Old Wranglers paired with a nice pair of cowboy boots and I’ve never felt better.
Who are your personal style icons?
My personal style icons are the old Chinese women who collect cans in Chinatown. Seriously. They don’t give a shit about looking cool, but always manage to.
